Samoa

The Island of Samoa is located about 1/2 way between Hawaii and Fiji.  This was my second stop on my South Pacific trip.  Formerly know as Western Samoa, it goes by Samoa now.  The majority of the 180,000 people live in small villages throughout the two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i. The capital and only big city is Apia, a clean and well organized town of 36,000.  Although there are many differences between Samoa and the Solomon Islands, both islands are very much agrarian societies living off the land.  Samoa is more developed with fairly good civic services and an infrastructure with paved roads.

The rainy season had started in Samoa.  Everything was lush and green and the island had a very tropical feel to it.  So different from the Solomon Islands were draught and water rationing was affecting everyones lives.
