Nicaragua - Land of Lakes and Volcanoes

TRLT_masthead.png

Visitors to Nicaragua are able to enjoy the natural beauty of dozens of volcanoes, rivers, and lakes, as well as two oceans. This is our first stop on a winter adventure that will take us to three different countries - Nicaragua & Costa Rica in Central America and Uruaguay in South America.

Besides its volcanoes, Nicaragua also has Latin America’s second largest freshwater lake - Lago de Nicaragua. Even with all its natural beauty, Nicaragua is very much a developing country. It is one of Latin America’s poorest countries and suffers from high unemployment. The main source of foreign income comes from remittances from Nicaraguans living abroad and foreign aid. Adding to the difficulties facing Nicaragua, has been political unrest and sometimes violent demonstrations - mainly in Managua the capital. This does not mean that travel to Nicaragua is not a good idea, it means knowing where to go and being travel smart about your choices of locations you travel to. Every travel article I’ve read and the people I’ve talked to with recent travel experience in Nicaragua, say it is a beautiful country well worth a visit as part of a Central America itinerary.

Interesting Facts About Nicaragua:

  • Nicaragua was once considered as a potential route to build an inter/ocean canal - before the Panama Canal was built. It is still being considered even today as an alternative route. Perhaps the 50 billion price tag is why the project seems to be going no where lately.

  • Nicaragua’s national sport is not actually soccer as most countries in Central America are - it is baseball. There are currently four Nicaraguans playing in Major League Baseball.

  • The river that forms the border between Honduras and Nicaragua is called the Rio Coco. It is the longest river in Central America at 680kms/422miles.

Our itinerary will take us to three different locations in Nicaragua - Granada, Ometepe Island and San Juan del Sur.
